THE DUHKS
Doors 7 PM, Show 8 PM
At the InsideOut Gallery 229 Garland Street in Traverse City, MI
The Winnipeg, Manitoba-based Duhks have always gravitated towards traditional roots-based song structures, but they've never stopped evolving since their inception five years ago. Due in part to a collective musical worldview that knows no boundaries, that evolution led the band to their latest offering Fast-Paced World, the first Duhks record to feature prodigies Sarah and Christian Dugas (replacing vocalist Jessee Havey and percussionist Scott Senior respectively). It's an album that reflects the quintet's newfound confidence, with Sarah bringing five original songs to the band's encyclopedic collection of originals and covers both old and new. It's that kind of musical DNA that makes the band's spot-on fusion of traditional bluegrass, folk rock, Afro-Cuban jazz and soul so accessible and yet so hard to pigeonhole. It's also earned them a Grammy Award nomination in the Best Country Vocal Performance category as well as a Juno award in their native Canada. Environmental issues are a passion for the band, inspiring them to launch The Duhks Sustainability Project (www.greenduhks.com) in October 2007. Spearheaded by Tania Elizabeth, the band's goal is to "tour on as sustainable a basis as possible; fueling our vehicle with Biodiesel, supporting local organic farmers wherever we go, wearing sustainable eco-conscious clothing, using earth-friendly shampoos, soaps and cosmetics and offsetting remaining CO2 emissions with carbon credits." As the band continues their own musical evolution, Fast-Paced World illustrates just how far the Duhks have come—and just how far they're willing to go to challenge themselves artistically. Ultimately though, according to Leonard, the Duhks "just want to play music that speaks to everybody." Mission accomplished.

LBC - The Sublime Tribute
with original members
Doors 7 PM, Show 8 PM
At the High Sides Brews & Tunes 103 N Main in Livingston, MT
This trio from long beach, CA, is keeping the music alive, selling out venues up to 10,000 people all over the world; but they're not too cool to pass up the small clubs. They play those as well, up front and personal with the fans. They have been quoted by major publications, national television and late Sublime singer's father, Jim Nowell, "The hottest live show in the tribute industry." They have headlined Nor Cal's x-fest with over 20,000 fans and have sold out numerous shows at the world famous Harry O's in Park City, UT, El Dorado County Fairgrounds, Empire Ballroom and the Rio in Vegas, and have also performed a number of other large venues. They have been honored to share the stage other great artists including E-40, Blue October, Pepper, Marky Ramone, Vanilla Ice, Tone Loc, Digital Underground, Berlin, Third Eye Blind and many more.
LBC has been giving audiences a chance to hear Sublime's music live since 2002. QBall, a long time friend of the late Bradley Nowell and Sublime, put together a band that could recreate the sound that everyone wanted to hear. He found Guitarist/Singer Matt Myers and Drummer Chris Chamberlain. The package was perfect, selling out crowds of up to 20,000 people. They headline Modesto's X-Fest every year, the world famous Harry O's in Park City, Cal Expo Amphitheater in Sacramento, and Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Irvine, to name a few. They also do the smaller clubs and venues as well, such as Galaxy Theater in Costa Mesa, Fat Cat in Modesto, Angels Roadhouse in Yucaipa and Apple Valley, and more. They have been honored to share the stage other great artists including E-40, Blue October, Pepper, Marky Ramone, Vanilla Ice, Tone Loc, Digital Underground, Berlin, Third Eye Blind and many more.

ANI DIFRANCO
with Amy Martin & the Missoula Coyote Choir
Doors 7 PM, Show 8 PM
At the Wilma Theatre 131 S Higgins Avenue in Missoula, MT
Since releasing her first recording in 1990, Ani DiFranco has established herself as one of the most influential and inspirational artists of the modern era. DiFranco’s innovative guitar style, signature percussive fingerpicking, expressive vocals and incisive lyrics—along with a constitutional inability to be anything less than totally real—have earned her a loyal, dedicated fan base and ongoing critical acclaim. The empowering spirit of this one-of-a-kind singer/songwriter, guitarist and producer is evident in songs that tackle barbed political and sexual issues with uncommon insight and compassion. With DiFranco, what you see and hear is what you get—the act of making music is inseparable from the process of living her life. In recent months, while taking time off from the road following the January 20 birth of her first child, daughter Petah Lucia, Ani has been handpicking the songs for her first-ever studio career retrospective, Canon, to be released September 11 on her Righteous Babe label. The two-CD set contains three-dozen songs spanning the years 1990-2006, as well as five re-recorded tracks. Until now, 1997’s Living in Clip, a live recording containing songs chosen by Ani from throughout her career, had served as the default overview of this prolific artist’s body of work. Essential though Living in Clip remains (Addicted to Noise called it “a profound collaboration with her audience—the essence of the rock & roll ideal”), the DiFranco oeuvre has been begging for a treatment that takes a healthy bite out of the whole enchilada. That makes this expansive new collection as welcome as it is definitive. Everything Ani has released, from that self-titled cassette 17 years ago to her most recent album, 2006’s Reprieve, has drawn critical accolades. Over the years, Rolling Stone has described her as “breathtakingly talented,” “fiercely independent,” “iconic” and “one of the few artists around who can really paint the rainbows.” Entertainment Weekly called Reprieve “beautifully committed music—the kind that’s as essential now as it has ever been.” Fittingly, though, it’s DiFranco’s fans who have the most illuminating things to say about her. “One of the things I love so much about Ani,” one wrote on Amazon.com, “is that she puts every single part of herself into her music: love, hate, fear, angst and, famously, views on every social and political issue you could think of. She doesn’t have a line she won’t cross, she truly puts herself out there in a way that artists rarely do today.” No, DiFranco is not the kind of artist anyone can be indifferent about—her music demands, and gets, the full attention of everyone who’s exposed to it.

ABIGAIL WASHBURN & THE SPARROW QUARTET
Featuring Bela Fleck with Casey Driessen and Ben Sollee
Doors 7 PM, Show 8 PM
At the Wilma Theatre 131 S Higgins Avenue in Missoula, MT
"Abigail Washburn stomped and skipped through fiery Appalachian takes on the
local songs of Sichuan. Her bilingualism's no gimmick,” hailed the LA Times
in a review of The Sparrow Quartet’s performance at Coachella. “She nails
the dips and peaks of pitch while leading her band in scorching variations
on simple, repetitive traditional melodies...she ended one Chinese song
about the pan-ethnic subject of baby-making by saying "That's some hot stuff
from the Sichuan province there."
May 2008 marks the release of Abigail Washburn and the Sparrow Quartet, the
follow-up to Abigail’s acclaimed Nettwerk debut, Song of the Traveling
Daughter. In the fall of 2006, the Sparrow Quartet – which features world
renowned banjoist, composer Bela Fleck (also the album’s producer),
Grammy-nominated fiddler Casey Driessen and roots/classical cellist Ben
Sollee - became the first artists to tour Tibet and China on a US government
sponsored cultural mission. The new album is an intimate exploration of
crossing global and cultural lines brought to life by the borderless sounds
of two banjos, fiddle and cello. The music is raw and highly composed,
equally hopeful and acutely aware of the struggle of life. Music for the
global citizen. Abigail Washburn and the Sparrow Quartet will begin their
first major touring of the US and abroad in the spring of 2008.

The music is raw and highly composed, equally hopeful and acutely aware of the struggle of life ... Music for the global citizen.
In addition to Abigail's growing acclaim as a solo artist, she made a name for herself as a member of the acclaimed old-time string band Uncle Earl. In the Sparrow Quartet, the bare-bones, rustic, and poignant sounds of singer/songwriter/banjo player Washburn's evocative vocals and clawhammer banjo style are supported by Ben Sollee's cello, an instrument that brings a dark, primeval feel to songs that sound like they're hundreds of years old, along with fiddler Casey Driessen and Bela Fleck's national steel guitar and banjo adding subtle grace notes to Washburn's timeless tales.
"Abigail Washburn stomped and skipped through fiery Appalachian takes on the local songs of Sichuan. "She nails the dips and peaks of pitch while leading her band in scorching variations on simple, repetitive traditional melodies...she ended one Chinese song about the pan-ethnic subject of baby-making by saying "That's some hot stuff from the Sichuan province there."
And, just in case you aren't familiar with Bela Fleck, there are some who say he's the premiere banjo player in the world. Others claim that Béla has virtually reinvented the image and the sound of the banjo through a remarkable performing and recording career that has taken him all over the musical map and on a range of solo projects and collaborations. He performed with New Grass Revival from 1981-1990, charting new territory with their blend of bluegrass, rock and country music. Toward the end of the New Grass years, Béla Fleck and the Flecktones was formed, integrating jazz, bebop and bluegrass. Bela has been nominated in more categories than anyone in Grammy history.
Don't miss the Sparrow Quartet's visit to Missoula, July 29.

Greene's enigmatic work then follows the human theme of contradiction—the
natural result of philosophy rooted in experimentation and growth. As
comfortable in an arena as an empty bar, with an acoustic or with
electric, Jackie Greene comes to symbolize a rare versatility. He's
open to trying just about anything…except being tied down. It's what
makes him so relatable for the sinners, the saints, the dreamers or
the broken-hearted. Regardless of musical tastes or background, the
emotional honesty and musical skill transcend all. For this, Jackie
Greene, becomes an artist fans will enjoy for decades to come.

YOUNG DUBLINERS
Doors 7 PM, Show 9 PM
At the The Top Hat 134 West Front Street in Missoula, MT
The hard-rocking Irish band, the Young Dubliners owe everything to their fans. "They keep us honest, expecting good music both on the road and on the albums," mentions frontman Keith Roberts.
The inspiration for Real World, the group's third record on Higher Octave, is drawn from the trials and tribulations of being a real, working band and their life on the road. "We are all aware of how lucky we are to be making a living by doing what we love. Without being on the road and playing to our fans, that just wouldn't be possible," Roberts explains. Building a fervent fan base comparable to that of jam band rockers like Phish and Dave Matthews Band, The Young Dubliners have become notorious for the whirling "jig pits" that erupt at their live shows. Musing about the band's sound, Roberts sums up the Young Dubliner's approach to their music, be it Celtic, Irish, or just plain rock. "I like to think that our take on songwriting and performance makes the Young Dubliner's sound unique and original. Our band is made up of Irish and American natives who draw influences from just about everywhere. Our strength is in the sum of our parts. We play as a band, as one."
